Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 2 is a landmark game that fulfills all the promises of its predecessor while taking its own strides forward. It has lived up to all the hype it created, delivering intense action sequences, dramatic story telling and is one of the most personalized game ever created. This epic sci-fi role playing game (RPG) continues the story of Commander Shepherd who beforehand knows about the galactic apocalypse approaching and will take any step that must be taken to avoid it. It is also a story of love, friendship and family faced with hopeless odds. The darkest aspects of humanity brought forward. All told with the same cinematic style and interactivity as Mass Effect 1. All technical issues of Mass Effect 1 like slow loading and sudden crashing have been removed. Read more reviews.
Diablo
Diablo is a game that combines all the elements of what an actual Role Playing Game (RPG) should comprise of: a good storyline, great combat moves, and great amount of interaction with various characters to personalize the game. You can choose from three different classes for your character: Warrior, the Rogue and the Sorcerer. Each has different style of gameplay and different skills and abilities. Gamers who like non-stop action will go for the warrior and for the ones who like using stealth as their main ability and are strategy makers will go for the Sorcerer and the Rogue. You can gain different types of weapons and equipment by slaying enemies and even by open various treasure chests found in your path. The game even has a great network play mode with which you can enjoy playing with your friends. Further, the game has awesome music and soundtracks which suit the environment and ambience of the game to the fullest. Voice acting is also good. Graphics are not very highly detailed but overall gameplay is really good and the game is worth playing. Read more reviews.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
This is a big release and there are considerable improvements as compared to the previous game. Firstly, the game has fast travelling. A new map system and you’ve got a new quest log. The new map system allows you to instantly transport or rather teleport to all the areas you have accessed with a single click. No more needless walking around but of course you can do that because the main point of Elder Scrolls is exploring. You have a ton of quests which you would want to do and a lot of options that makes the game interesting. Combat system has improved considerably if not perfect. The game has great graphics. Textures and lighting is amazing. Frame rate is constant. You can sometimes experience hitches and frame drops when you are running across the overworld map. You would have a better experience graphically if playing on a high end PC. Minor bugs like crashing and fighting invisible bugs are there. But still it is a lot of fun to play this game and will not ruin your experience. Read more reviews.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
This was the first RPG set in the Star Wars universe. The game is set during the period known as the Jedi Civil War. You can be the hero or the villain depending on which side you choose, the savior of the galaxy or the conqueror. The graphics are pretty good but not very spectacular by modern standards. The game has excellent music and nice voice acting. Where the game lacks in quest variety which isn’t a lot, the game covers it up in depth. The storyline is excellent making it one the best RPG. There are a lot of twists and turns in the game. The characters are very well written with very good back stories. Then there is the Big Plot Twist which can only be revealed when you play the game. Gameplay is exceedingly good. Plenty of side quests giving you a lot of choices between the light side or the dark side. The only problems are very minor like too much emphasis on combat which won’t bother you much. Only people who don’t like RPGs will not like this game. So go for it. Read more reviews.
Dragon Age: Origins
When was the last time that you truly got lost in the game world? When was the last time you came to know fictional characters so well that you thought about them even when you were not playing? If you value excellent storytelling, Dragon Age draws you in and gets you invested. There are loads of quests to perform, lots of loot to gather and lots of dragons and demons to slay. You will learn about the strong role religion plays, the tenuous relationships between mages and templars and explore the ins and outs of the dwarven caste system. The voice acting is fantastic. You are given a variety of choices that affect the gameplay. Few bugs like some broken quests exist but major part of the adventure is excellent and involving. It looks great, runs great and the interface is fantastic. And it is tactical and challenging at the same time so it makes it absolutely the preferred game. Read more reviews.
Fallout 3
Fallout 3 was the most anticipated game of the year 2008. Fallout has finally hit and it has hit hard. This game is very different than other RPG games. You can’t just keep on doing repetitive actions and expect to level up. Gaining level is based on completing combats and quests and when you gain a level you can increase your abilities or add perks which really personalizes your overall experience. You can choose your own play style according to your abilities. Say if you require anything from anyone. You can do a side quest to earn that rewards. Or talk him into giving them that depending on your Charisma skills. Or just shoot the person. You can choose between being morally good or bad. Moreover the weapons are really cool. The world is gone wrong and you are completely immersed in the sci-fi universe fighting for survival. Game sound is fantastic and graphics are sharp and highly detailed. Some technical issues like slowing down and minor bugs can be encountered but that won’t affect the overall experience. Read more reviews.
Neverwinter Nights
Neverwinter Nights had been released in 2002. If you like RPGs, if you like Dungeons and Dragons and if you like the nitty-gritty and fantasy RPGs then you would love Neverwinter Nights. With over 80 hours of gameplay this game is sure to knock your socks off. Your put in the role of a hero in the city called Neverwinter Nights. You choose between different classes of heroes. There is a plague that is ravaging Neverwinter Nights and you have to fix it. The game has very deep and addictive storyline. It is a roller coaster of motions. You can have companions, one of them at a time. But the strong point in the game is not its storyline (although the storyline is very good), it is the modding of the game. You can create your own game and ventures by the tool set provided to you by the game developers and enjoy it even more. Read more reviews.
Deus Ex
The game was under-rated surprisingly despite of the fact that it was a good combination of an FPS and an RPG. You actually have more than one way to complete a job in this game. People react to your activities, for example if you are hacking a computer in front of the people they would shout at you.. The story is kind of confusing at times as you are tossed in between situations, in the middle of nowhere and you have to find your way out. Even the dialogs are a bit confusing and creepy from history and politics. I mean you have to go deep into history sometimes which is really bugging. The concept of three endings is a bit different and unexpected. Overall the game should be given a try and the Metacritic rating proves that. Read more reviews.
Mass Effect
It is an action RPG and one the best in business. The expectations had always been high for Mass Effect. It was compared to the Knights of the Old republic, one the biggest and widely played RPG. And it surely did live up to the hype. One of the most talked about things about Mass Effect is its combat system. This time Bioware went for a straight action RPG and if you look at it from the surface it looks kind of a shooter. It won’t even please the shooting fans completely or the RPG fans completely. It is a squad based game and you are in battle with a squad of three. The game requires a lot of pausing as you can map only one special ability to a hotkey. The game also lacks good tutorials so you require at least 3 to 4 hours of gameplay to get the hold of the combat. There are a ton of side quests and each of them has their own story and interesting to play. But in the end the RPG elements of the game are fantastic. The sound, graphics and character interaction and decision making are built to one great experience. The main technical issues are the dropping of frame rate and failing of the engine to recognize the pushing of buttons. But the fact is despite of the technical shortcomings you will surely going to enjoy the game exploring the storyline and the side quests all along. Read more reviews.
Fallout
Fallout is rated as one the best RPGs to be released in the past 2 decades. The makers of the game have given special attention to even the smallest details of the game to enhance the gameplay and make it worth playing again. Sound quality of the game is good and graphics are also great. You are the descendant of Vault Dweller are out to your town by finding the water chip. You develop your character by a combination of both skills gained and quests completed to increase your level. The character interaction is not very developed and although you start as a loner in the game, you can convince other non-playing characters to join you in your quest. Some minor notches in the game tend to bring the rating of Fallout down by 1 or 2 but still it’s a classic in its own ways. Read more reviews.
Fable 2
Fable 2 is a game about choices. This is not the usual “should I be a girl or a boy” choice (though the game has that too) but it’s more about lifestyle. Decisions you make affect your appearance and how people react to you. The idea of the game is to get you to feel your character progressing as a person but you don’t really get that sense. As nothing can change the big decisions you make at the end of the game. The game interaction has improved. You can give people gifts, ask for money, and give them a vulgar thrust but ultimately very artificial as you are just moving meters about how people feel about you. The combat has improved and the controls are really simple. One of the big features of the game is Co-Op play. However, online Co-Op is not yet supported. It’s not a very challenging game as it is not even supposed to be, as you are one of the strongest heroes in Albion. The bar has been raised by games like Mass Effect and Oblivion on western RPG and Fable 2 falls a little short of that bar but still it’s a very fun and adventurous game to play. Read more reviews.
The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
There is a good chance you have heard and played this game. It’s a huge open ended game which lets you explore a big 3D world pretty much in any direction, in any way you want and with any number of characters. It has a lot of replay value to it. With the open ended side come a few minor problems. Many individual elements in the game are not very well developed, but they can be ignored. One of the really good and broad choices the game presents to you is to create your own character. You can choose from barbarians, assassins, scouts and spell swords, etc. The game has got 30 different types of skills on which you have to build through the game. The combat is a little bit disappointing as you just keep on slashing and hacking without any indicator that tells you how much damage you are causing. The game requires a fast system and a fast graphic card. If you have them you will enjoy the game even better. The music and sound is by Jeremy Soule and is excellent but if you have played other role playing games you would be familiar. It’s really a traditional RPG at heart and it’s a great value for your gaming dollar. Read more reviews.
Diablo 2
Diablo 2 is a hybrid of Arcade and RPG. It is played from a 2D isometric view and involves a lot of spell casting and whacking, collecting loads of weapons and treasures and at the same time increasing your level and improving your character. It is one game that you can sit and play for hours and you
won’t even come to know when time flies by. You can choose between various warriors namely Amazon, Barbarian, Necromancer, Paladin or Sorceress. It is delectably rendered with high details and great imagination. Gameplay has been improved as compared to Diablo 1. There are considerable improvements in voice, video and cinematics too. Over all a must play. Read more reviews.
Fallout 2
In the beginning of the game you are asked to perform a task which will prove that you are the chosen one and task is pretty easy. Once done, you will be worthy to wear the suit of Vault Dweller. You find out that your village is under extinction and you just have one chance to save your village by finding something called the Garden of Eden Creation Kit. You visit town to town and performing quests to restore order in the towns. The game depth has been increased by increasing the number of quests and side quests. New faces and new creatures have been introduced but the look of the game is pretty much like its predecessor. Gameplay and controls are also similar but minute tweaks have been fixed. The story line is really good and the game will surely absorb you in its world. Read more reviews.
Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout: New Vegas seems to be the giant expansion for Fallout 3 rather than a new game. But if you liked Fallout 3 you would surely like to visit New Vegas. US has been struck with nuclear war but Las Vegas has managed to survive and mostly intact. A group called New California Republic holds the area for the time being. A dictator who has named himself Caesar is trying to take down New Vegas. The area is free to explore and the game has a choice of three endings that totally depends what choices you make during the game. Iron sight shooting mode has been introduced and you will find a variety of new creatures to kill. Some of the side missions are even better than the main story. The game has the same engine as Fallout 3 and continues to have the same issues. Most bugs are disappointing but still they can’t beat one of the most addictive formulas in modern gaming. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords
The game is set 5 years after the events of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1. You play as a new character who you have never met in the first game and once again you are a Jedi caught up in a mystery. You don’t remember certain things of your past, who you are and why you are so important to events that are happening around the galaxy. You are a disgraced Jedi, who has lost its connection with the Force but the Sith is still after you as they think you are the last Jedi and want to eliminate you. New developer Obsidian Entertainment has added a new feature called influence in the game, but they didn’t improve the game engine too much. Yes, there is snow and rain but loading time is still endless. There is a good value of replaybility in the series. The game raises quite a lot of philosophical issues which people might have not thought of before. Shortly speaking, this is the classical RPG and one of the best RPGs you can get. Read more reviews.
Fable
Fable is set in the continent of Albion which is one of the greatest assets of the game. The map is huge, well detailed, accurately textured and carefully built. Fable has greater graphics than many RPGs and controls are well suited for a PC game. Fable is a very open-ended game with a lot of exploration to be done and a lot of characters to interact with. Interesting fact: you can only play as a mail hero and you cannot choose any female heroes. The way you choose to develop you skills and attributes determines how your character will shape up to be like. If you focus more on melee combat, your character turns out to be brutal and menacing. If you are using magic as your main weapon of combat then the outlook of you character will show this and he tends to age at an accelerated rate. The choices you make throughout the game decide how people perceive you and react to your actions. Overall it is a well written RPG with an excellent gameplay. Read more reviews.
Neverwinter Nights 2
When Neverwinter Nights came into the market it was pretty clear that there will be a sequel to it. The graphics quality is much higher now, the animations have become much smoother, characters and textures are more detailed. Everything is better as compared to the previous game. The art style is little bit goofed up giving it a little bit of a cartoony touch. But that can be looked past. The only thing that goes unnoticed is the lack lustered sound design. The music is a big disappointment. Only four new tracks have been introduced. Voice acting is not as good as expected. The balancing is a lot better now. Still there are ridiculously overpowered classes but still it’s a lot of improvements. Story line is pretty good, better than the prequel. Character interaction has improved a lot. Wide varieties of characters have been introduced. The control scheme is what drives you into the game. Gameplay is basically the same as the original game but with a better companion system. Overall the game itself is fine but I wish the voice and the game engine had been improved. Read more reviews.
The Witcher
The Witcher was unlucky to be released during the busy holiday season but was overshadowed by the vast number of other high profile releases. That’s very unfortunate as Witcher is something every RPG lover should try. The Witcher is heavily based on various Polish fantasy novels of the same name. While it takes place after the events covered in the book the players are given very little initially to go on. All you really know is that you are Geralt – a genetically mutated monster slayer or Witcher. During a particular encounter with a very brutal beast Geralt is mysteriously snatched from the jaws of death by his fellow Witcher but ends up losing his memory. The storyline of Witcher is fantastically intricate and superbly well told. Interactivity in the game is truly impressive. It is quite impressive in technical aspects too. The game’s graphics are excellent but at the highest graphical setting the game will surely stutter even on high-end PCs. Voice quality is good but sometimes character say things which are irrelevant and don’t make sense when you talk to them. But overall the game delivers one of the best and most rewarding Role Playing experiences and is worth playing. Read more reviews.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
The game is from the makers of Fallout and has a lot of similarity with the prototype. It is a first person RPG and uses Valve’s new Source engine – the very same technology used in Half-Life 2. In Bloodlines you create a vampire that conforms to the seven major vampires found in the in the white world of the Vampires RPGs. The game is set in the greedy, modern day Los Angeles underworld and you start the game by struggling and doing tasks for your master. But its not long before you enter the real storyline which involves the Vampires Armageddon. The main story is very compelling and you’ll be drawn into the world of Vampire politics and fighting. There are four different endings to the game so that means plenty of replayability. The dialogues are sharply written and there are beautiful facial expressions, thanks to the game engine. The game suffers from certain graphical glitches like flickering textures and a few minor bugs, but in the end it is an absorbing RPG and is worth checking out. Read more reviews.
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Deus Ex: Invisible War is a highly anticipated sequel to a game that is more than three years old now and one that combined Role Playing, First Person Shooting, Stealth Action as well as a deep storyline. In Invisible War you play as Alex D who can either be male or female depending on the very first decision you make in the game. You are a student at the tarsus academy which is a sort of covert ops school for gifted students. Chicago and your academy are under attack and it seems there is more than one organization that has something against you or wants something from your student body. One issue that still can be seen is that characters seem 2D and flat. You cannot sense their motions and you can go around killing just anyone. Stealth is really the main feature in this game. You can lurk in shadows; equip your character with special abilities that would make him/her invisible. The morality is really great in the game so you are not judged by the number of people you kill. The game engine incorporates realistic and dynamic physics. Not an excellent gameplay but better than the previous version. It would be better if you have a good hardware as the game has high detailed environments and frame rate may drop if your PC is not good. The game has its weaknesses but its significant strengths cover it all up and you should definitely give it a try. Read more reviews.
Gothic 3
Gothic 3 is being considered as one the best RPGs of the past many years. You start by being held inside some kind of magical field of death. You can choose between three classes to join but the storyline comes to the same conclusions regardless of who you sided with. Gothic 3′s open world allows you to play the main quest or go on your own and explore. The game practically allows you to do anything. You can harvest plants and flowers for potions or pick a fight with the Orcs. Combat system is good and you will enjoy fighting. But the best thing about Gothic 3 is simply exploring the world. Characterization is really good and every NPC has its own job in the game. If the NPCs have a name on their head it means they have a quest for you or something to sell. You can practically use any item that has a word on it. On the whole the game is a great RPG and you will spend many hours exploring the world of Gothic 3. Read more reviews.
Arcania: Gothic 4
Most of the people thought that Gothic 4 was a mere copy of Risen whereas it is better RPG than the latter. If you are into “exploring” the arena thoroughly before playing, then I must suggest that don’t waste your time. Unlike Risen, the missions won’t let you miss even a single cave. The graphics is quite controversial: the environment and the surroundings are okay to some extent, but the characters are designed in the worst outlook. The sound and lip movements are not matched perfectly, which gives a rather odd feeling. There is not much of a difference between the inventory of the different characters, most of the things and the abilities are common in most of the characters. The skill tree really needs to be updated. Whereas the best part of the game is that the game changes the environment and places very frequently which makes it interesting unlike the other RPGs. So overall the game is pretty mediocre. Read more reviews.
Dragon Age 2
You don’t have to look far to spot the changes in Dragon Age 2 the upcoming RPG game by BioWare and EA. The story structure of Dragon 2 is a story inside a story by a narrator who keeps thing interesting by occasionally exaggerating the action. There is also a noticeably improved and stylish art design. The protagonist is no longer mute. Now the speech comes with a dialog wheel that trades verbatim dialog transcripts for a just the jist summary like Mass Effect. Combat has been turned into much smoother and less clunky affair all without trading in the tactical stuff like it was in the first game. Hopefully, now the game will move more smoothly without sacrificing the strategic elements that made the first game so much fun. Read more reviews.
Mass Effect 3
When the galaxy was imperiled, he was chosen to fight them. When the galaxy was threatened the second time, he was brought back to save us. Now when all else seems lost and the fate of the galaxy rests in his hands again will he be able to save it. No one knows what they are, what they want or where they are from. But one thing is certain if Shepherd does not bring help soon there won’t be enough left to save. This is the maximum hype created by any game and is the most awaited game of 2011. Read more reviews.
Diablo 3
Diablo 3 was released due the huge fan base of Diablo 1 and Diablo 2. The game is set 20 years past the events of Diablo 2. This time Blizzard Entertainment is offering a lot more of gameplay changes such as destructible terrain, removal of potions, a new hero class while retaining feel of the game. Characterization has improved and the characters are more detailed and bigger in size. The combat system and the interface have been improved and now skills will have more preference as the use of potions has been downgraded. Still you will continue exploring vast expanses of towns and dungeons and slaying monsters and different creatures. The game is up for release this year and is a much awaited RPG. Read more reviews.
Fable 3
Fable 3 is considered as a great game in the RPG world. It is sometimes disjoined and sloppy but is filled with a lot of original concept and adventure. Set 50 years past Fable 2 you play as a prince or princess who will go out to rule the mythical world of Albion, the continent where the Fable series has been set. Your sibling is the king and his iron fisted rules have left the kingdom weary. In Fable 3 you work towards winning allies and ultimately overthrowing your brother to become the ruler yourself. The game has a fantastic climax. The breadcrumb trail is back again but a bit complicated. The map has considerably improved as compared to Fable 2 and is a high point. Some minor problems are voices running over each other, ending up in nonsensical situations and some minor bugs. The main test comes when you become the king and your every decision affects the game very strongly. Co-Op mode has been improved considerably making it very addictive and a must play. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
The story is setup 200 years after all the events that took place in the Oblivion in the North region of Skyrim. The main story revolves around the whole place being attacked by dragons and they have to be stopped. The map will have 5 main series and there will be a lot of exploration of caves, dungeons and underground areas. The quests will be a lot more dynamic than the previous games. To add this the developers are making the cut scenes even more dynamic. Instead of just zooming into the face their will a lot of movement and interaction. Combat has improved a lot. There is going to be a lot of enemies so that means a lot of combat. The third person view will be improved. You can level up to a maximum of 50 and you can transport faster. Game engine is totally revamped and new so there are very few bugs and technical issues. A lot more realism has been added to the game. I am looking forward to play this game. Read more reviews.
The Witcher 2: Assassins of the King
The Witcher 2 is the continuation of the saga and the game is well connected with the first part. The storyline is being continued and the events will have a connection with the prequel’s events. The engine of the game has been upgraded for the better animations, dialogues and cutscenes. The things that could not be delivered in the first game will be delivered now. In the outro of Witcher 1 we could see the attempt made for the assassination of the King but it was unsuccessful. Now the king does not feel safe and wants Geralt to help him and there are still a lot of places where he needs to restore order in the kingdom. A lot of travelling is to be done in the game. Geralt will be going after the people who are conspiring for the assassination of the king and this is the main motive of the game. Combat system has been re-written. Many new things have been introduced like more companions. More decisive options have been introduced that control the storyline. The major difference as compared to Witcher 1 is being able to combine different elements in combat. But for further information we’ll have to wait for the release of the game scheduled in May 2011. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
It’s been too long since the last Deus Ex game. Invisible war came out in 2003 and since then it has been a challenge for Eidos to hold out hope till it announced the release of Human Revolution in 2011. If you haven’t played any of the earlier Deus Ex then go and play the first one. It’s a fine blend of combat, role playing and puzzle solving that only a few games have been able to replicate. Based on what has been shown so far it seems that Human Revolution would be a worthy sequel. The graphics and the game play seem to have gone under drastic changes. The storyline follows a new protagonist Adam Janson and is set years before the events of the first Deus Ex. Janson gets himself wrapped in something sinister and in the process gets his body broke. The only solution is to turn Janson into a super powered agent with the help of machines who is committed to unraveling the conspiracy that created him. Sound is great and story line seems worth going through. Stealth is still your main strength. For more on Human Revolution you’ll have to wait till its release. Read more reviews.
